Give Blood

I'm not sure whether Hurricane Katrina presents a special need to give blood, but it seems like a good thing to do anyway. Go here to find a blood drive near you.

I found this New Republic article very enlightening on the subject of donating blood after a disaster. (retrieved through Google's cache; it's subscriber only at TNR.)

Well your advice is still sound -- it's good to give blood (anytime!). I don't get the sense that the Katrina disaster is provoking unneeded blood donations that will just go to waste (as the post-9/11 surge did, according to that piece).
